#NBA: @Hornets now Pelicans? @Bobcats back to Hornets?
NBA team, the New Orleans Hornets are expected to now be the New Orleans Pelicans, and this can go down as early as next season.
Why the name change, you ask? Well, the city of New Orleans is in the state of Louisiana, and the state’s bird is the pelican, which you will see on both the state seal and flag. Also, Tom Benson, who owns the New Orleans Saints NFL team, owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname, and he acquired the Hornets in April as well, so changes shall come. Benson’s wife agrees with this and also included that the franchise would like to go from teal and purple team colors to red, gold, and navy blue.
The great NBA retiree Michael Jordan, who also owns the NBA team the Charlotte Bobcats, said in November that he would entertain the idea of bringing the Hornets’ name back to Charlotte. The Hornets went to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002.
Really though? I mean, I see the symbolic side of this, but how serious can you take a pelican when it comes to shutting it down on the court? Take a look yourself…are you intimidated?
Haha! All jokes aside, good luck to this team, though.
